Romantic hotels in Suffolk

Tucked away in East England, Suffolk's isolation from the main road and rail arteries of the UK has ensured that it remains largely rural and unspoilt.

Here you'll find big inspiring skies, beautiful coast and country landscapes, together with genteel sea-side towns. It is a tranquil, relaxing destination for a romantic hotel break.

Finding a room for romance - romantic hotels in Suffolk

There are some wonderfully characterful and romantic hotels in Suffolk. We've hand-picked the best of them for you to book securely at great rates - like the Swan in the old antiques centre of Lavenham.

Making the most of your romantic break

Explore the country lanes of Suffolk and you'll always chance upon a pretty village, a lovely church and often a fine historic house. This is where John Constable spent many hours capturing the peace and beauty that still exists in fact as well as on canvas. Hold hands and go wandering through the landscape or explore on a bicycle made for two.

Highlights on the coast include Aldeburgh, the setting for an annual summer arts festival, inspired by Benjamin Britten. The composer lies buried next to his musical partner and lover Peter Pears in the village churchyard. In November Aldeburgh hosts a three-day international poetry festival. Book early if you want to visit for these wonderful events.

Go at other times for total relaxation and peace. Wander along the peebly beach together, stopping to admire (or not) Maggi Hambling's sculpture Scallop. Watch the small fishing boats return to shore to sell their catch from wooden huts on the beach. Take a bottle of wine, two glasses and a takeaway from the excellent fish and chip shop to the beach for a romantic, alfresco meal for two.

Southwold, metropolitan by Aldeburgh standards, remains a charming seaside town in north Suffolk. You'd do better to find a better example of an upmarket, quintessentially English resort.

Walk together along the promenade, beach and crashing waves on one side, beach huts on the other. Stroll up to the cannons on Gun Hill and onto the creek. There's also a wonderful pier and a lighthouse in the centre of town.

Whether you're exploring coast or countryside, castles, churches or historic houses and sensuous gardens, you'll find Suffolk a wonderful place for a romantic short break.
