Vienna, for centuries a cultural colossus in the heart of Europe, now blends its long history with modern dynamism. The reflection of St. Stephen's Cathedral in the glass of a Haas House shopping centre exemplifies this.

Few world cities are as unashamedly romantic and it takes little imagination to hear the rustle of a Viennese silk ball-gown as the horse-drawn carriages pass. Choose Vienna for a romantic weekend break and you will not be disappointed.

Refresh yourselves at the historic Haas & Haas at Stephansplatz 4. Sip your tea in the ancient courtyard garden. Alternatively head for the Lusthaus in the Prater. Oozing Austrian charm this 18th century former hunting lodge, is now a romantic café and scene of a many a secret tryst.

At the heart of the romantic old city lie the narrow, cobbled streets of Singerstrasse, Blutgasse and Domgasse where you can walk in the footsteps of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

As night falls take you amour to Biedermeier. Long illuminated by red lights, it is now a centre for restaurants and bars.

Next day clear your head with a romantic stroll in the Vienna Woods, the green lung that almost encircles the city. As you wander the paths through woods and meadows look out for the carved hearts and names carved into trees and their message of everlasting love.
