Romantic breaks in Amsterdam
Although Amsterdam does not leap to mind as a romantic city in the same way as Florence, Venice and Prague, if the stag parties are avoided, there are few more romantic places for a break.
In the warmer months, soak up the sun outside a canal café, and watch the world go by. On a Winter's morning watch the graceful network of canals emerge from the mist, framed by handsome 17th-century town houses.

Making the most of your romantic break
By day immerse yourselves in the cultural wonderland of the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rembrandt House Museum. Explore the Waterlooplein flea market and intriguing shops that line the cobbled streets, pausing to buy your lover some tulips at the floating flower market. True romantics should buy their partner a diamond in this world gem centre and proclaim their undying love.
It's at night that Amsterdam is at its most romantic. Many of the 1200 or so bridges are lit by fairy lights reflected in the dark mirror of the waterways. Start with a drink in one of the many atmospheric brown cafés (think pub).
Giggle your way around the red light district and enjoy a fabulous romantic dinner at one of the excellent ethic food eateries. Catch a performance at the Concertgebouw or the Muziektheater or check out some of the chic clubs.
Night or day the warmth of the inhabitants, the human scale and character of the architecture and the relaxing ever-present water will soon seduce you and draw you back for more romantic breaks.
