Romantic weekend breaks in Paris

Is Paris, as many think the most romantic city in the world? If you've been before you'll probably agree. If not it's time to find out for yourself.

Romantic hotels in Paris

There are some magnificent and romantic hotels. Some of the best are in the Opera area, the heart of the city and the room can prove difficult to leave for sightseeing.

Making the most of your romantic break

When you do tear yourselves from your romantic room we suggest taking your amour to the arty left bank to walk hand in hand along the boulevards. Pose for a street portrait artist.Stop for a coffee or something stronger and watch the world go by at the cafes that are a Parisian institution before moving on to Montmartre.

Wander aimlessly through the back streets of the Marais, the Jardin du Luxembourg and Parc Monceau and climb to the heights of Sacré-Coeur. Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe.

Then up to the top of the Eiffel tower, holding each other tight against the pull of vertigo. Next stop the Louvre - well you've got to see the Mona Lisa.

Then some shopping for treats to look forward to. Like the gorgeous handmade lingerie available from Sabbia Rosa (01 45 48 88 37).

As sunset draws near head North East to the Parc des Buttes Chaumont, a romantic wonderland of cliffs and secret paths. Go up to the folly at the top for an unforgettable sun-downer view of Paris.

Now you've got an appetite head to one of the restaurants for which Paris is famous. Book ahead for somewhere special like La Rose de France (01 43 54 10 12), a bijou restaurant in the magical hideaway Place Dauphine.

Paris is, if anything even more romantic by night, preferably on the banks of the Seine. Better still book a window table for dinner on the Seine aboard the elegant Don Juan II (01 44 54 14 70). Seven courses for around £110pp plus wine.

Next day (if it's a Sunday), after a lazy breakfast in bed, do as the Parians do, and head out of Paris to a guinguette. From the Gare de Lyon, take the 20-minute RER to Champigny and stroll the pretty riverside path for five minutes to the Guinguette de l'Ile du Martin-Pecheur (01 49 83 03 02; menus £16.50). A place to find the real thing - live accordion music and old chansons in an open-air restaurant and dance hall.

But you don't have hit the tourist trail to find romantic Paris. Romance is all around. The people, the historic buildings and the culture contrive to create an atmosphere that will make your heart pound.
