For a more orginal shopping experience go to the cobbled lanes of Cockburn, Victoria and St Mary's Steets, and William Street in the western part of New Town.

It's here that you will find something more interesting to buy your amour as a keepsake of a wonderful romantic break. As the end of the day climb Calton Hill together to watch the sun setting over the city.

From here you will see Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Arthur's Seat, the Firth of Forth, New Town and the full length of Princes Street.

Then back to your romantic hotel to relax and freshen up before hitting the town. There's no shortage of venues. Try Tonic on North Castle Street for a sophisticated cocktail appertif and then on to romantic restaurant for dinner.
