Making the most of your romantic break in Kent
Kent's nickname derived from the bounty of its orchards and hopfields, but it the county also has more than it's fair share of fine gardens.
Stroll the paths of Scotney Castle Garden, surely one of England's most romantic gardens, as they wind around the ruins of a small 14thC moated castle. Open-air theatre performances by the moat in the summer are wonderfully romantic.
Hold hands and walk through the carpets of bluebells in spring at Emmetts Garden, or enjoy the scent of the roses in Summer. At any time of year the garden inspires and the woodland walks and views of the Weald are particularly romantic in Autumn.
Untended Kent's landscape is equally impressive. The country town of Tenterden, the 'Jewel of the Weald', is a good place from which to explore the ancient woodland and verdant meadows of this beautiful and tranquil country area.
In the South of the county walk the High Downs to the White Cliffs of Dover.
In the North, the atmospheric river fogs and deserted promontories of Thameside remain unchanged since described by Dickens in Great Expectations. As does the hauntingly romantic Romney Marsh area.
Head to the coast and watch the catch being unloaded at Whitstable harbour. You can enjoy fine fresh seafood at any time of year - but romantic foodies should come for the Oyster Festival in July.
The architecture bears witness to a county rich in history. There are magnificent cathedrals in Canterbury and Rochester, romantic castles such as Leeds, Hever and Dover and fine counry houses such as Chartwell, Smallhythe Place, Ightham Mote, and Penshurst Place.
Hunt for antiques in Royal Tunbridge Wells. Visit a vineyard or drift through the countryside to Bodiam Castle under steam on the Kent East Sussex Railway.
Kent has a lot to offer lovers whether their holiday is short or long or just a quick break from routine.
