Making the most of your romantic break
The new Forest is a place to move slowly through, on foot, by bike or on horse-back. Wild ponies wander freely throughout the area, a fenceless freedom also enjoyed by donkeys in the pretty villages of Burley and Beaulieu. This adds to the atmosphere of romantic rural idyll, further enhanced by the thatched pubs and tea rooms,thoughtfully provided to aid relaxation and rejuvenation.
Find paradise in the Exbury Gardens. All aboard the Exbury Steam Railway and over the pond in Summer Lane Garden, across the rock gardens and on to the American Garden.
Go in May or early June to see the azaleas and rhododendrons at their best. Hold hands on the hydrangea walk or stop for a cuddle on the camelia walk, before taking the riverside path to the pond with its black swans, the sweet-scented rose garden beyond.
The famously beautiful Furzey Gardens also are a wonderful place to relax. Take a picnic and lie watching the dragonflies hover over the water lilies at one of the lakes.
